Renewing Your Albanian Residence Permit

Residence permits expire — and renewal is simpler than the first application only if you start on time and keep your documents in order.

Most Albanian residence permits are issued for a limited period and must be renewed through e-Albania before expiry. The official renewal fee is 2.250 ALL. Missing the renewal window can mean starting from zero — this guide explains the process and the deadlines.

When to start the renewal

Open the renewal on e-Albania up to 60 days before your permit expires — and use the whole window. The legal processing ceiling is 12 weeks (the regulation speaks of 30 working days), but 2025-2026 practice is far slower than the law. One resident's account is typical: "mine took about 8 months from beginning to getting the card in hand. I think the general timeframe is 3 months but the system has been overwhelmed lately" (r/AlbaniaExpats). Expat Facebook groups describe the renewal office as months behind on its backlog. File early, and keep the submission receipt — it is your proof of legal stay while the card is being produced.

Diary the other deadline too: the six-month presence rule. Spending more than six months outside Albania within the permit year can make the renewal deniable (US Embassy guidance). If your life is split between two countries, keep entry/exit evidence and expect questions.

Renewal documents

A renewal is not a rubber stamp — most documents must be re-issued fresh:

  • A new notarised lease (or ownership certificate). This is the moment some landlords exploit — rent increases "sprung" exactly when you need the document. Negotiate renewal terms into your original contract; see the notarized lease guide.
  • A renewed 12-month health insurance policy, compliant with the same rules as the first application — a lapsed or travel-grade policy fails here too. See the insurance guide.
  • A fresh criminal record certificate, again within its 6-month validity, apostilled and sworn-translated. Yes, again. Start the home-country paperwork early: the FBI route alone takes 4-8 weeks.
  • Proof of continued means — pension accreditation, employment contract, or funds, matching your permit category.

Keep the file boring: same address, same employer, same category. Changing employer or registered address mid-track can reset you to a one-year permit, and one-year permits are renewable a maximum of five consecutive times before you must change strategy.

The renewal fee

The state fee for renewing a standard residence permit is 2.250 ALL (roughly €22), paid through e-Albania at filing; the property-owner category renews at 4.000 ALL. The fee is the smallest line of the real renewal budget: add the new insurance year, fresh apostilles and sworn translations for the criminal record, notary fees for the lease, and any professional help. A realistic all-in renewal lands in the low-to-mid hundreds of euros — the itemised figures are in the costs guide.

If your permit has already expired

If the expiry date has already passed, act immediately. Overstaying brings fines and, in the serious cases, a re-entry ban of up to five years — the US Embassy reports even dual nationals being fined. An expired permit generally cannot be "renewed" at all: you file a fresh first-time application, with all documents new, while your status is irregular — the worst negotiating position possible.

If instead you applied on time and received a refusal, the route is different: read the refusal notice, respect the appeal deadline, and weigh appeal against reapplication — we break down both in the rejection and appeal guide. And if you are approaching your fifth consecutive one-year renewal, start planning the jump to permanent residence instead of a sixth card.

Sources & verification

Deadlines and the six-month rule follow the law and embassy guidance; real processing times are documented by applicant accounts — official SLAs and actual practice diverge, as noted on the page.

  • Law 79/2021 "On Foreigners" — renewal windows, five-time limit on one-year permits; e-Albania renewal service instructions
  • U.S. Embassy in Tirana — Entering and Residing in Albania (six-month rule, overstay fines)
  • r/AlbaniaExpats — "Applying for Residency" (8-month processing, "overwhelmed" system, 2025)
