Albania Residence Permits for UK Citizens

Post-Brexit, Albania has become a popular alternative to the usual European retirement and remote-work spots — here is how Brits can stay long-term.

Since Brexit, UK citizens are non-EU nationals across Europe — and Albania's flexible rules, low costs and 90-day visa-free entry make it increasingly attractive. This guide covers the permit routes most used by British citizens and the UK-specific document formalities.

Visa-free entry for Brits: the limits

British passport holders enter Albania visa-free for 90 days in any 180-day period — the same short-stay allowance you now have across most of Europe. Unlike Americans, there is no one-year privilege. Overstaying is taken seriously: fines at departure and, in aggravated cases, an entry ban of up to five years. If you are planning anything longer than a season, the permit is not optional — start the paperwork while you are still comfortably inside your 90 days, because some documents (police certificate, apostille) take weeks to arrive from the UK.

Permit routes popular with UK citizens

Three routes dominate among Brits:

  • Retirement permit (Art. 85) — a pension of at least 1,200,000 ALL/year (roughly £870/month at recent rates). The UK State Pension alone already clears the threshold for most full-contribution retirees; add a private pension and you are comfortably above. Requires an Albanian bank account for the pension, a notarized one-year lease and health cover. See the retirement guide.
  • Digital mobile worker Unique Permit — for remote workers with UK employers or clients. Note the income threshold is a moving target: sources conflict, and from April 2026 several advisers link it to the Albanian minimum wage (ALL 50,000/month). Verify the figure in force the month you apply — we track the dispute on the nomad visa page.
  • Property owner permit (Art. 84) — no minimum property value by law; popular with Brits buying on the Riviera. See property permit.

A realistic warning on budgets: Albania is cheaper than Spain, but no longer "cheap-cheap". Foreign over-60 permit holders fell 15.5% in 2024 as rents and food prices climbed (INSTAT data reported by cna.al), and central Tirana one-beds run €400–700. Come with recent numbers, not 2021 blog posts.

UK documents: ACRO certificate and apostille

Since Law 43/2025, a criminal record certificate is mandatory for every permit application (only under-16s and over-75s are exempt). For Brits that means an ACRO Police Certificate, apostilled by the FCDO Legalisation Office in Milton Keynes — a notary stamp is not a substitute. The certificate must be issued within six months of your application, then sworn-translated into Albanian. Get the sequence right — ACRO first, apostille second, translation last — or you pay twice. Details in the apostille walkthrough.

Healthcare and GHIC considerations

Your GHIC (or old EHIC) is for temporary stays and, in any case, Albania sits outside the EHIC network and outside the UK's reciprocal healthcare arrangements. There is no S1 route here. For the permit you need a one-year private health policy that explicitly names Albania with around €30,000 of cover; basic travel insurance is routinely rejected. Over 60, comprehensive premiums climb steeply — price this before you commit, not after.

On tax there is one genuine advantage over Americans: a UK–Albania double taxation treaty exists, so you will not be taxed twice on the same income. But as a non-EU national you fall under the ordinary Albanian scale (0–23%): the headline "0% on foreign pensions" is reserved for EU/EEA citizens. UK State Pension uprating is payable in Albania, but run the combined numbers with a tax adviser — and see our tax hub and insurance guide first.
