Indian citizens need a visa to enter Albania, so most applications start at the Albanian e-visa portal or embassy with a Type D long-stay visa. Demand from Indian workers and professionals has grown sharply. This guide covers the route step by step, with the India-specific document requirements.
Entry rules for Indian passport holders
Indian passports need a visa for Albania. One useful exception: if you hold a valid, already-used multiple-entry Schengen, US or UK visa (or residence permit from those countries), you can enter visa-free. Everyone else applies online through the Albanian e-visa portal. A practical complication reported by many applicants: consular coverage for India is limited, and cases are sometimes handled by Albanian missions in third countries (Beijing and Abu Dhabi are frequently mentioned), which adds courier time and cost.
The Type D visa from India
For work or residence you will need a Type D long-stay visa — see the Type D guide. Apply at least 60 days before travel; Indian applicants report files stuck at "Paid and In Verification Process" for weeks beyond the travel date, refusals with no written reason, and even requests to pay the fee a second time after an appeal. Keep every receipt and screenshot, and never book non-refundable flights before the visa is in hand. If refused, you can appeal or reapply — but treat each application as if it will be audited: consistent bank statements, a credible invitation, a coherent story.
Work permits for Indian nationals
Indians are now the third-largest permit community in Albania (3,882 active permits in June 2026, up roughly 50–90% year on year), working in construction, IT services and hospitality. The system is employer-driven: the Albanian employer files the Leje Unike (Unique Permit) on e-Albania, then you collect the Type D visa and the card. Gate-to-gate timing via licensed recruiters is typically 40–50 days.
Protect yourself. Under Albanian law the employer pays the recruitment costs — workers should not be charged for the job. Investigative reporting (BIRN) and the US State Department's 2025 Trafficking in Persons Report document agencies charging workers €1,200–2,000, contracts switched on arrival, and passports withheld. A real case from Reddit, Saranda 2026: promised 40 hours/5 days with food and housing — delivered 6 days a week, €50/month for food, twelve people in two rooms, €500 salary. Before you sign anything:
- Verify the recruiter's licence on the Indian government's eMigrate portal; legitimate recruiters for Albania are MEA-licensed.
- Get the exact contract you will sign in Albania before paying anything — salary, hours, housing, food.
- Never hand over your passport for "safekeeping" after arrival.
- Be sceptical of "Albania is your gateway to Europe" sales talk. An Albanian work permit gives you no right to work in the EU or Schengen — Albania is not in either. If Europe is the goal, apply to Europe directly.
Indian documents: PCC, apostille and translations
You will need a Police Clearance Certificate (via Passport Seva or your regional police authority), apostilled by the MEA — India is in the Hague Apostille Convention, so no embassy legalisation is needed. Since Law 43/2025 the criminal record certificate is mandatory for every application, must be issued within six months, and needs a sworn translation into Albanian. Degrees and employment letters should also be apostilled before you fly; redoing them from Tirana is slow and expensive.
When professional help is worth it: a licensed immigration lawyer in Albania earns their fee if your employer changes mid-process (a new employer means restarting with a fresh one-year permit), if your e-visa is refused twice, or if documents are rejected without explanation. Renewals open 60 days before expiry — put the date in your calendar on day one.
